Her family relocated to Edmonds, Washington when she was just six years old. father Jack was sociologist who worked at the University of Washington as a vice-president of internal communications and later, he was the president of the Washington Biotechnology and Biomedical Association and the mother Karen was the special education teacher for Seaview Elementary School located in Edmonds.
